Frequently Asked Questions

What type of exhaust clamp should I use?

Band clamps (full circle) provide the best seal for slip-fit connections. Lap-joint clamps work well for connections with one pipe inside another. U-bolts are basic and cheap but can crush pipes. V-band clamps are premium for easy removal. Match clamp type to your connection style for best results.

Do exhaust tips affect sound or performance?

Tips primarily affect appearance, not performance. However, significantly smaller tips can create slight restriction (not noticeable on most builds). Tip shape can slightly affect sound character - rolled edges are mellowest, straight-cut is sharpest. The muffler and pipe size determine real performance and sound.

How do I stop exhaust rattles and vibration?

Rattles usually come from: worn rubber hangers (replace with new isolators), metal-to-metal contact (add clearance or isolators), loose clamps (tighten or replace), or broken internal muffler parts (replace muffler). Polyurethane hangers are stiffer but can transmit more noise than rubber - use quality rubber for daily drivers.

What does a catalytic converter shield do?

Cat shields are metal guards that bolt around your catalytic converter to prevent theft. Thieves steal converters for their precious metals - shields make it difficult and time-consuming to cut them off. Worth installing on high-theft-risk vehicles like trucks, SUVs, and Priuses that have easy-to-access converters.

Do I need exhaust gaskets when installing a new system?

Yes, always use new gaskets at flange connections - old gaskets compress and won't reseal properly. Common types: donut gaskets, flat flange gaskets, and header/manifold gaskets. Using correct gaskets prevents exhaust leaks which cause noise, performance loss, and can allow fumes into the cabin.
