Subaru WRX Exhaust Parts

Enhance that signature Subaru boxer rumble with performance exhaust parts for your WRX. Shop mufflers, cat-back systems, and catalytic converters designed for the FA20 and FA24 turbo engines.

WRX Exhaust by Generation

VA (2015-2021) - FA20DIT 2.0L turbo boxer. Very popular exhaust aftermarket.

VB (2022+) - FA24F 2.4L turbo. Newer platform with growing exhaust options.

The Boxer Sound

Subaru's horizontally opposed engines create a unique exhaust note. Modern WRX models have equal-length headers stock, so exhaust upgrades bring back character while adding performance.

Turbo Considerations

The WRX's turbo benefits significantly from reduced backpressure. A cat-back or turbo-back system allows the turbo to spool faster and reduces heat buildup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a cat-back exhaust void my WRX warranty?

Subaru's warranty stance varies by dealer. A cat-back system typically doesn't affect powertrain warranty coverage since it doesn't alter emissions components. However, some dealers are stricter than others with modified vehicles. Document everything, keep your stock parts, and ask your dealer their policy on cat-back exhaust if warranty coverage concerns you.

What's the best exhaust size for a stock turbo WRX?

A 3-inch cat-back is optimal for the stock turbo FA20/FA24 WRX. This size reduces backpressure significantly while maintaining exhaust velocity. Larger than 3-inch doesn't provide meaningful benefit on the stock turbo and can actually hurt low-end response. Match the 3-inch to the stock downpipe or consider a turbo-back for maximum gains.

Can I get the classic Subaru boxer rumble on my WRX?

The classic 'subie rumble' came from unequal length headers on older models. Modern WRX (2015+) has equal length headers for better performance, so the rumble is muted. Some owners install unequal length headers to get the sound, but this sacrifices some power. An exhaust upgrade improves tone but won't fully recreate that classic rumble without header changes.

Do I need a tune with a cat-back exhaust on my WRX?

A cat-back alone on a WRX typically doesn't require a tune - the ECU can adapt. However, WRXs respond very well to tuning, and if you're modifying exhaust, you might as well optimize with an e-tune or dyno tune to maximize the benefit. If you go turbo-back with catless downpipe, a tune is mandatory.

How much power will a turbo-back exhaust add to my WRX?

A turbo-back system can add 25-40+ horsepower on a WRX when combined with a proper tune. The stock downpipe is very restrictive, so replacing it dramatically improves turbo efficiency and reduces backpressure. The gains are much larger than cat-back alone because you're addressing the main restriction point right at the turbo outlet.
