Installation Guides by Product Type
Muffler Installation
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Time Required: 1-2 hours
Professional Installation Recommended: Optional
-
Preparation: Spray all exhaust connections with penetrating oil 24 hours before installation
-
Raise Vehicle: Safely lift and support vehicle on jack stands
-
Remove Old Muffler: Cut or unbolt old muffler, starting from rear and working forward
-
Clean Connections: Wire brush all pipe connections to ensure leak-free seal
-
Test Fit: Slide new muffler into place without tightening to check fitment
-
Install Clamps: Position band clamps over connections
-
Align System: Ensure muffler hangs straight with proper ground clearance (minimum 6 inches)
-
Tighten: Tighten all clamps to manufacturer specifications
-
Check Clearances: Verify no contact with frame, fuel tank, or body
-
Start Engine: Check for leaks at all connections
Cat-Back Exhaust System Installation
Difficulty: Moderate
Time Required: 2-4 hours
Professional Installation Recommended: Yes, if unfamiliar with exhaust work
-
Preparation: Soak all connections with penetrating oil overnight
-
Document Stock System: Take photos of stock exhaust routing and hanger positions
-
Remove Stock Exhaust: Start at rear, working toward catalytic converter
-
Inspect Catalytic Converter: Check for damage or excessive buildup
-
Install New System: Begin at catalytic converter, working toward rear
-
Use All Supplied Hardware: Install hangers, clamps, and gaskets as provided
-
Leave Clamps Loose: Don't fully tighten until entire system is in place
-
Check Alignment: Ensure even spacing around heat shields and frame
-
Tighten All Connections: Work from front to back, torquing to spec
-
Road Test: Drive 10-15 minutes, then recheck all connections
Catalytic Converter Installation
Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
Time Required: 2-3 hours
Professional Installation Recommended: Yes
-
Soak Connections: Apply penetrating oil to all bolts and flanges 24 hours prior
-
Disconnect Battery: Prevent O2 sensor codes during installation
-
Remove O2 Sensors: Use O2 sensor socket, noting positions (upstream/downstream)
-
Remove Old Converter: Cut or unbolt from exhaust system
-
Install New Gaskets: Replace all exhaust gaskets - never reuse old ones
-
Install New Converter: Ensure proper flow direction (arrow on converter body)
-
Reinstall O2 Sensors: Apply anti-seize to threads, torque to 30-35 ft-lbs
-
Reconnect Battery: Clear any stored codes with OBD scanner
-
Start Engine: Check for leaks and proper sensor operation
-
Drive Cycle: Complete 20-30 minute drive to set readiness monitors
Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid
-
Over-tightening Clamps: Can crack pipes - follow torque specs
-
Skipping Alignment: Misaligned exhaust causes rattles and premature failure
-
Reusing Old Gaskets: Always install new gaskets at flange connections
-
Wrong Hanger Positions: Causes stress points and cracking
-
Insufficient Ground Clearance: Minimum 6" clearance from ground
-
Not Using Anti-Seize: Apply to O2 sensor threads for future removal
-
Forgetting Heat Shields: Reinstall all factory heat shields
